Miami is wonderful for dogs — until the heat and humidity start working against their coat and skin.
Warm, damp weather traps moisture in your dog's fur. That can lead to matting, especially in long or curly coats, skin irritation, hot spots, ear problems, and that damp-dog smell that comes back fast after a bath. Fleas and ticks also love Florida weather, because it never really gets cold enough to stop them.
So what actually helps?
Regular grooming helps more than most people think. A clean, fully dried coat is much less likely to mat or irritate the skin than a coat that stays damp after rain, a swim, or a bath at home. Drying matters just as much as washing — a dog that air-dries with tangles will often end up with tighter knots later.
Ears need extra attention in Miami too. Moisture trapped in the ears can lead to discomfort and infections, so gentle ear cleaning during grooming is not just cosmetic. If you notice redness, a strong smell, or your dog shaking their head a lot, check with your veterinarian — grooming helps maintain ears, but it does not replace veterinary care.
Paws need attention in Miami too. Check them regularly for irritation, cracks, or debris after walks. Paw balm may help moisturize dry pads, but it does not prevent burns from hot pavement. Choose cooler walking times and shaded routes, and contact your veterinarian if the pads are painful or injured.
And one important note for double-coated dogs like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and Shepherds: shaving them down for summer does not usually help them stay cool. Their coat actually helps protect them from heat and sun. Regular brushing and deshedding is a much safer way to help them stay comfortable.
You do not need to groom more often just because you live in Miami. You need a routine that fits Miami: regular baths, full drying, brushing between visits, and early attention to skin, ears, and paws before a small problem becomes a big one.
At The Doggy Machine, we bring the grooming van to your door, so your dog stays cool and calm at home, not stressed in traffic or a hot waiting room.
